Year’s End

There will be no celebratory

gun fire to mark this closing year.

It will be gently folded over,

wrapped with reverence,

placed into a box and I will

set aside the key.

Perhaps someday I will be able

to come back to it.

Look at it with clearer eyes, see

in it the marking threads that

connect me to where I wished

to be.

But tonight I pack it away in winter

starlight and newly fallen snow

because for now this last year

is a year I no longer wish to know.
