unfinished business

I fear

this will be the spring
that the asparagus
will not be picked,
that this summer
will be the first
that the grass will
not be mowed.

It will be an autumn
of unharvested apples
and blowing leaves
and unfinished business.

A winter when for the first time
the snows will blow in
over the open field
unmet by your blade
and I will miss you.
