the uncommon door

Your life has been singular and unique
so on this last day, we will not stand on
ceremony. It will be a day of laughter
and kisses and last good byes,
the loosening of loving ties.

But I pray your time here be marked
by a grander exit, one greater than your arrival,
leading to a landscape wild and free.
That this last journey will not lead you
through a common door but through
an uncommon one.

Not through a hidden wardrobe
nor the cupboard under the stairs
but through a wind blown door
ringed with burning rushlights or
through a bower of red and yellow
honeysuckles leading to a farther shore.

Many will take this journey, and I hear
that the weather is fair.
But the well worn path and its pearly gate
are not for you.
Take the hidden path up the mountain side
or the trail that skirts along the beach.

They afford a wider view.
